| Post subject: | Looking for a complete world postal database |
Hi everyone, I’m in the process of planning a project that needs a comprehensive postal database covering as many countries as possible. What I’m after isn’t just the postal codes themselves, but also extra details like city names, regions, and ideally GPS coordinates to make location mapping more precise. The challenge I’m facing is that different countries have very different formats, update schedules, and levels of accessibility for this data. Some are well-documented and public, others are fragmented or hard to track down. If anyone here has tackled building or sourcing a world postal database, I’d really appreciate hearing about your approach, where you sourced the information, and how you kept it consistent across all regions. |

Hi! That sounds like an ambitious project. For building a comprehensive postal database, consistency is key—especially when dealing with different formats and update schedules. Many people start by combining official postal service datasets from each country with global geolocation services to get GPS coordinates. Open-source projects and APIs like GeoNames or OpenStreetMap can help fill in gaps and standardize city and region names. It’s also helpful to implement a system that flags outdated entries so you can update them regularly. Keeping everything in a structured format like CSV or a relational database makes cross-region queries and mapping much easier. |
